EXFOLIATING SKIN TREATMENT
Microdermabrasion was developed in Italy in 1985 and was approved by the FDA for use in this country in 1996. Most microdermabrasion units use aluminum oxide crystals, as well as diamond or bristle tips. Medical microdermabrasion units are much more powerful and only used under the supervision of a physician in a physicians office. Other units used by estheticians are less powerful.
Microdermabrasion for patients in Plano works by basically “sand blasting” the external layer of the skin called the stratum corneum and if the physician is aggressive, this will also include the upper epidermis. This mechanical exfoliation of the skins surface is disrupted and a cascade of cell division takes place and this in turn stimulates the cells called fibroblasts in the skin leading to the production of increased collagen formation. This results in a stronger lattice work for the skin helping to eliminate fine lines and improving the texture of the skin and decreasing the visibility of pore size.
Some of the benefits of medical grade microdermabrasion are textural changes, decrease in hyperpigmentation, photo damage (skin damage from sun exposure), and diminishing fine lines. When used in conjunction with prescription medication from your physician such as Retinoids, Hydroquinone and antioxidants the results are greatly improved. This procedure is generally repeated every 2-3 weeks in a series of 6 treatments or can be used as skin care maintenance every 4-6 weeks. Microdermabrasion can also be used on other areas besides the face, such as neck, chest, back, and arms.
