Just because aging is a natural process doesn’t mean there aren’t options to prevent, treat and improve the appearance of those pesky wrinkles and lines! Although collagen injections used to be the go-to treatment of choice, fairly recently injectable dermal fillers such as Juvederm, which contain hyaluronic acid, have seen a huge growth in popularity since the active ingredient is naturally occurring in the body and longer-lasting.
What can I expect with Juvéderm?
Treatments are done in our office and take about thirty minutes. Once injected, the effect is instantaneous. Juvederm features hyaluronic acid inside of a crystal-clear gel which is combined with Lidocaine for anesthesia to make your experience with dermal fillers comfortable. Your physician may work with a combination of densities to assist you in reaching your desired appearance, or in addition, use other kinds of volumizing or structural fillers (Bellafill, Sculptra, Radiesse) depending on region and the situation being treated. In certain cases, Botox in combination with Juvederm enhances to final outcome and relaxes the muscles beneath the skin causing the wrinkle.
Juvederm is injected into the skin (dermis) to create volume, leading to a healthy, natural, youthful appearance. Juvederm is great for restoring a more natural and sensuous appearance, when injected into the lip. Using Juvederm or any of the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers means that you don’t have to worry about an allergic reaction. Juvederm is absolutely safe to use immediately without prior skin testing.
What regions are Juvéderm best suited for treatment?
Many of the most common regions on the face respond positively, such as forehead wrinkles, regions between and around the eyes, corners of the mouth, and even scarring from acne. Juvéderm can also be used to enhance the lips and improve smile lines. Botox in conjunction with dermal fillers like Juvederm improve the final outcome by relaxing the muscle that causes the wrinkle on the skin above it.
How safe is it?
Juvéderm is very safe, since it is made of naturally occurring ingredients already found in the body, so eventually it will disperse without adverse effect.
What is the method of treatment/application?
Juvéderm dermal filler is injected beneath the layers of your skin in the mid-dermis, and without a pre skin test required, patients are usually done in less than half an hour. Although it is rare, if pain relief is requested, an anesthetic can be applied before the treatment (about half an hour beforehand). In lip augmentation procedures we often use a nerve block containing lidocaine, just like at the dentist!
How long does it last?
There is no singular answer since it can be so different for all patients. Depending on variables such as age, lifestyle choices (past and present), skin type, and area of application it can last shorter or longer, but the most common duration is between six to nine months. Lip treatments typically are the shortest lasting since they see frequent movement.
One huge benefit of Juvéderm injectable dermal filler is that it has a great duration — not too short and not too long (or permanent), so its application can be changed and adapted depending on patients’ wants and needs. Our appearance is always changing, so every return trip for treatment is a great time to reevaluate how best to use Juvéderm next.
What do I look like right afterwards?
Patients can return to their typical lifestyles as soon as treatment is finished, since there is so little discomfort. However, there could be some swelling to the treated areas, with the duration varying depending on where the treatment was applied. Our physicians recommend holding gel ice packs to minimize any swelling or bruising. Any visible signs of bruising can be covered with camouflage makeup, from Makeup Forever, until they subside.
