Hyperhidrosis – Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis – Excessive Sweating

Over four million Americans suffer from excessive sweating a condition called hyperhidrosis which is caused by overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. If you suffer from excessive sweating of underarms, palms of hands, feet or head and neck areas, it can be embarrassing, stain your clothing and affect your confidence level, self-esteem and interfere with your job or social life. Chronic sweating of hands and feet may cause maceration of the skin with fungal or bacterial infections, cracking of skin and an adverse odor.

The good news is that we now offer a quick and easy treatment using BOTOX for men and women. Although Botox is typically utilized in wrinkle treatments, it has been proven to effectively treat over-active sweating! This occurs because Botox prevents the release of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine at the presynaptic nerve ending and if Acetylcholine is not released the sweat glands will not be stimulated and will not secrete bodily salts and water, which we refer to as sweat.

How do you determine where to place Botox?

In some cases we perform a Minors Starch Iodine test which consists of placing iodine on the surface tested and sprinkling starch over it. With excessive sweating the starch will turn black to indicate the areas of excessive sweating.

What is treatment like?

During a typical treatment we prep the affected area with disinfectant and then apply an anesthetic cream for approximately 30-45 minutes under saran wrap occlusion to improve the degree of anesthesia. Then with a tiny needle Botox is placed under the skin causing the formation of a tiny bleb spaced about 1-2 cm apart in the area of excessive sweating. After your Botox injections you can continue your normal activities. There should be a decrease in sweating in approximately 5-10 days, but maximum at 2 weeks. Treatment can last approximately 9 months and some patients that repeat their Botox treatments on a regular basis have noticed an increase in the interval between treatments. Treatment of the hands and feet are more sensitive and may require ice or oral sedation and in some cases, especially for feet, IV sedation is required.
